Meet Motion 2016/2017

VETS:

Liz "BAMF" Murphy
Hometown: Golden, CO
Major: Architecture
Fun Fact: Is the Ultimate BAE
This gymnast does it all. She builds buildings, volunteers, hikes, swims with only one arm, the list goes on. Oh, did I mention that she also bakes pies and cookies from scratch? Warning: may crawl away during confrontation.

Traci "Schwasti" Castonguay
Hometown: Issaquah, WA
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Fun Fact: Loves her dog Finn more than Kanye loves Kanye.
She may hold the world record for the most concussions by a single person, surprisingly none were from ultimate. This rad chick can shred it like a pro, even competed with them. She's actually probably safer on a board than her own two feet.

Danielle "Sparky" Tran
Hometown: Orange, CA
Major: Industrial Engineering
Fun Fact: Loves Tobin Heath
Sparky is our resident nap and brag expert. If it's the middle of the day, you can find her in bed. If it's any other time, you can find this generous vet clad in a collared button up, glasses, and some clean kicks eating with someone she just bought a meal for, or Liz. Chances are you most likely found Liz and they've stopped talking to you mid conversation so that they can have a stare down.

 Gianna "G" Milano
Hometown: Fresno, CA
Major: Animal Science
Fun Fact: Will gobble anyone, anywhere

If you want snapchats of someone elbow deep in a cow, definitely invest in a friendship with G. She flies around on silks and soars on the field.

Lauren "Bernie" Bryne
Hometown: Anaheim, CA
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Fun Fact: Want to know some very personal details most don't share, here's your girl

If you're looking for a cuddle buddy at a tourney, keep looking. If you're looking for someone to huck 50+ yards, you've found your girl. If you're looking for a buddy to make not so discreet innuendos, you've also found your girl.

Maya "Smang" Joye
Hometown: Palo Alto, CA
Major: Wine & Viticulture
Fun Fact: May actually have a soul

She missed her time by about 40 years and can FINALLY drive. She's full of 70s dance moves and styles. She'll start the dance off before a game and cheer the loudest during it. Maya Joye- Callahan 2015.

Rachel "Queso" Eierman
Hometown: Eau Claire, WI
Major: Architecture
Fun Fact: Grows to be 7' tall when skying people

She confirms that Wisconsonites really do love cheese. You'll probably never see this girl unless you're in studio. Besides throwing some sick flicks, this chick builds some crazy structures.

Danielle "Danger Dan" Purdy
Hometown: Oxnard, CA
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Fun Fact: The real question is whether she is more dangerous to you or herself.

Loudest sideline out there (and she now knows what to say). She still likes soccer a little to much, but with more time I am sure we can convert her fully. Obviously only knows how to fall in style.

Carolyn "Tink" McBirney
Hometown: Menlo Park, CA
Major: Biology
Fun Fact: Does not get songs.

Although she is not "hip" with the acronyms, she does go through doors often. And if you want her to wear a dress at your wedding she better be a part of the wedding.

Holly "Sox" Harrison
Hometown: Nevada City, CA
Major: Economics
Fun Fact: Can use terrible pickup lines to actually pick up boys.

Tell her to wear high heels to formal and she will shut you down. But as SOON as you get there she will tell you how she wishes she had worn heels. Too bad HOLLY!

Maddy "Pebbles" Giglio
Hometown: Elk Grove, CA
Major: Graphic Communications
Fun Fact: May or may not be able to ride a bike, but will blame it on the bike either way.

Metro queen, well if they had a queen. She is maybe a little too obsessed with Disneyland and stickers, but she makes up for it with a cute dog.

Olivia "Happy Feet" Doty
Hometown: Santa Clarita
Major: Journalism
Fun Fact: Team mom and maybe a little too nice if that is possible.

Hopefully we will actually get to see her play this year. And her feet will be a little less happy. But I mean at least penguins are cute.

Tara "2Chinz" Fussell
Hometown: Issaquah, WA
Major: Mechanical Engineering

Fun Fact: Can't hug every cat and is upset about it.

May seem quiet at first, but talk to her about cats and you'll have to camp out for awhile. Don't be fooled by her kindness, she'll break you on the field.

Zoe "BZ" Anderson
Hometown: Tahoe City
Major: Psychology

Fun Fact: Does not understand the concept of compliments.

Can make the best faces to ruin a picture (normally on purpose), and if she compliments you she probably hates you so you better hope she gives you a hard time. And she normally laughs harder at her own jokes than anyone else.

Autumn "Got 'em" Barker
Hometown: Olympia, Washington
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Fun Fact: Once fell asleep on a blueberry

She should probably start paying utility bills to the library, because she literally lives there. She's a great time when she leaves her natural habitat, and wishes people would give her a break and stop roasting her.

Bonita "Bo" Galvan

Caroline "Carol" Swanson
Hometown: West Linn, Oregon
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Fun Fact: Hates being called Carol.

She hates handling, but can huck it past you all day. She loves soccer more than life itself, but we don't allow that here. If you have any questions about birds or Nike shoes hit her up.

Chloe "Pronk" Li
Hometown: Cupertino, California
Major: Business
Fun Fact: Gets joy out of finance.

Obviously has no sense of self-preservation because she throws her body in front of the disc like it's nothing. This current lay out D champ may crack you up and look like she's keeping it together, but is always internally screaming.

Courtney "Snap" Petrella
Hometown: Nesco, New Jersey
Major: Architecture
Fun Fact: Thinks pasta is too spicy.
Spends 95% of her time in studio but stills manages to kill it on the field after pulling two all nighters in a row. Loves to snowboard so much that she sacrificed one of the screws holding her ankle together for it.

Diana "Diane" Swanson
Hometown: West Linn, Oregon
Major: Physics
Fun Fact: Loves rocks

She can jump up to twice her height, but can injure any part of her body by simply existing. She loves her major so much that she identifies as physics itself.

Hometown: Maple Corner, Vermont
Major: Architecture

Hannah "Spuddy" Stepanek
Hometown: Livermore, California

Major: Kinesiology
Fun Fact: Found a creek once and liked it.
Will claim that California is far inferior to Oregon, but we're glad she's sticking it out for us. She'll jump into any puddle she finds, and is secretly a golden retriever. Our resident wrestling champion can win any fight by making you laugh so hard you can't breathe.

Kiana "Roast" Dyson
Hometown: Manhattan, New York

Just met her? She'll roast you anyway, so you've gotta get used to it. This East Coaster can always be spotted in at least 6 layers of clothing. She may not know how to drive, but she can code like no other.

Laura "Darwin" Lodolo
Hometown: Sunnyvale, California
Major: Biology
Fun Fact: Yells at cars to stop at stop signs

Ivy "IV" Tseng
Hometown: Irvine, CA
Major: Kinesiology
Fun Fact: Has been known to scream "Banana"

Kate "Sunny" Parkinson
Hometown: Shoreline, WA
Major: Aerospace Engineering
Fun Fact: Uses all of her plus dollars to feed vets.
This future NASA employee is potentially one of the most positive people you will ever meet. She may not look intimidating, but will bid fearlessly for the disc-even if she does it feet first.

Molly "Compost" Cluff
Hometown: Turlock, CA
Major: Child Development

Prez Day Quals

Motion had a weekend filled of firsts.
We sent a Developmental Team for the first time to a tournament, this one was Prez Day Quals. Motion was able to send a Developmental Team due to the automatic bid they gained this year to Prez Day Invite. Motion brought along all of their first and second year players and a few others who wanted to join in on the fun!
It was a crazy weekend filled with huge improvement seen in EVERY player out on the field. The current Motion captains even let some of their 2nd years take charge (at least partially).
Our weekend started out with one member of our team throwing up the night before and a first game bye. Motion played 4 games and went 2-2 on Saturday with loses against Santa Clara and Williams and wins against Cal B and USC B. Some of our rookies stepped up for the first time and had the opportunity to handle, and some even got the privilege to handle in a zone.
Sunday Motion woke up with one more fallen solider as our captain Liz threw up during the night. (Our team contracted what we believe in the stomach flu that is going around and has, as of today, taken 8). Once we got to the field Motion put up a good fight against Chico in their last game of pool play but lost and ended up 4th in Pool B.
We ended up in the constellation bracket playing for 5th/6th place with our first game against UCLA B. With one of the better games of the weekend Motion came up with a win on universe point to defeat UCLA B! Motion was ecstatic and carried that energy into another hard fought loss against Chico.
Overall Motion improved tremendously (especially our first year players)! We only lost to A Teams therefore beating all of the B Teams we played. And had a great weekend full of laughs, layouts, crazy catches, learning experiences, and pictures.

Santa Barbara Tourney

Motion had their FIRST tournament of the season this past weekend and what a weekend it was! Motion finished off Saturday at the top of their pool with a HUGE win against the second ranked team in the tournament University of Southern California. They also had wins against University of Arizona and UC Irvine. The fields may have been everyone's biggest rival as they were destroyed from Santa Barbara Qualifiers that was the weekend before. But by winning their pool Motion did not have to play in the Pre-Quarters game on Saturday saving their legs.
Sunday Motion started out in the Championship bracket and had a tough loss to UC San Diego on hard cap. We had two more losses on the day, both ending in hard cap! But Motion scored the last point in all three games and never lost by more than 2 points, ending up outscoring our opponents for the weekend 60-48. Motion ended in 8th place for the weekend and they are all excited for the season to come and what they have in store for the rest of the season!
YEAH MOTION!

Kendra Fallon Tournament Recap

Other weekend, another tournament!
This past weekend all of Motion made the daunting trip down to San Diego. With 30 people in tote, Motion was ready to play together as one team for the first time this year.
On Day One Motion went 2-2 with losses to USC and UC Santa Barbara and wins against UCSD X and ASU. As funbassadors for 5 Ultimate we picked the most spirited player from each team to reach into our "swag bag" and pick some awesome 5 Ultimate gear. After our first full day of the tournament Motion all decided to get side cornrows to sport the next day.
Day Two Motion finished up their last pool play with a win against Long Beach putting us in 3rd place in our pool. We started our first bracket game against our long time rivals the San Diego State Gnomes and had a hard loss to them putting us in the 5th place bracket. The next game Motion played was against UCSD Y. With a victory and the most positive and spirited I have seen Motion we played a game of "Look Down, Look Up" with UCSD Y. The energy from this game carried over to our last and final game of the tournament against University of Arizona. The spirit and energy lead us to a close victory over U of A and a great end to a long weekend and a 5th place finish.
As funbassadors for 5 Ultimate and a group of women who overall love the game of Ultimate we all had an amazing weekend filled with the people we love, the sport we love to play and the opponents who love the sport just as much as we do!

This tournament was Motion's last pre-season tournament and we as a team look forward to our next two quarters and our next tournament which will be Santa Barbara Invite on January 24th and 25th.

2 for 1 Tourney Recap - SCRUW and SLO Hats

SCRUW Halloween Tournament October 25th & 26th, 2014 - Santa Clara, CA

For the first time, we split the team into two. It was a little rough playing with less than 14 on each team, but everyone got a lot of playing time and started building some great connections on and off the field.

Team Nemo captained by Liz went 2-4 over the weekend and Team Dori captained by Swag went 5-1.

Thanks to the McKown's for opening up your home to us!

4th Annual SLO Hats Tournament November 8th, 2014 - San Luis Obispo, CA

This tournament brings in a lot of people from out of town and is always a good time. Everyone registers and then is put onto one of eight teams. Who knows who could be on your team?! An AUDL San Jose Spider? A Local pick-up player? A U19 World Champion? A Club Nationals contender? Coach Fisch?

We encouraged everyone to have some fun and learn from all of this talent. Everyone is exposed to new ways of running vertical, horizontal, and end zone stacks and it's always fun when we get to work on guarding new people and trying new throws.

This year's theme was Timber by Pitbull ft. Ke$ha. Oh and by golly did it go down. There were many laughs, great plays, and some sick layouts!

It was great seeing everyone having fun and getting to know the ultimate community. Even though it's challenging and fun to try to win tournaments as an individual or team, it's equally as important to use a tournament like this to remember why we love the game.

The next tournament will be KFall (Kendra Fallon Memorial Tournament - formerly known as SoCal Warm-Up) at UCSD on November 22nd and 23rd.

Gas PEDAL!
